Zero Residue Draft and Leak Detection for Clean Rooms and Lab Facilities

Cirrus Wind Indicator’s vapor-based airflow visualization, compact form factor, and no‑VOC “Cloud” cartridge make it well-suited for airflow diagnostics in labs and clean rooms when used as a smoke‑test tool.

Using Cirrus Wind Indicator for Airflow Testing and Leakage Checks:

Make sure windows and doors are in the same position they are during normal operation (closed for most leakage tests, or set according to your SOP).

Install a cartridge, power on the unit, and hold it so the outlet is pointed toward the area you want to test; use the button or bellows to release a small vapor puff and watch how the cloud moves.

Room Pressure and Doorway Checks

  • Close the room, turn on any HVAC or ventilation equipment that normally runs, then step outside and close the door behind you.
  • Position the outlet just below the door, at the gap or a small crack (about one‑eighth inch if you have to create an opening), and give a brief puff of vapor; if the cloud is pulled into the room the room is under negative pressure, if it is pushed away the room is positive, and if it hangs in place the pressures are roughly equal.

Airflow Testing at Vents and Hoods

  • Hold the Cirrus near supply diffusers, return grilles, or hood faces and release a short burst of vapor to visualize the direction of flow, its relative strength, and whether the pattern looks laminar or turbulent.
  • Move slowly along the face of a hood or grille while repeating small puffs; changes in how the cloud bends or breaks up help you spot dead zones, backflow, or uneven capture.

Leakage Checks at Penetrations and Envelopes

  • For building or equipment leakage, place the outlet close to suspected paths (wall penetrations, outlet boxes, window frames, duct joints, door and window perimeters) and emit brief puffs, watching to see if the vapor is drawn into or blown out of cracks.
  • Trace along seams and joints in a slow sweep, re‑puffing as needed; any consistent pull or push of the cloud into a gap indicates an air leak that may need sealing.

Best Practices for clear, clean tests

  • Use short, controlled puffs instead of continuous discharge so the space stays clear enough to see fine movement and to minimize any lingering vapor.
  • Take note of the cloud’s initial movement right at the source, since this is the most accurate indicator of local leakage or airflow direction before mixing and diffusion blur the pattern.
